CHart - UK

Welcome to CHArt's web site. CHArt was established in 1985 by art and design historians who happened also to be computer enthusiasts. Initially a forum for the exchange of ideas between people who were using computers in their research, the largely academic membership was soon augmented by members from museums and art galleries, as well as individuals involved in the management of the visual and textual archives and libraries relevant to the subject.

CHArt is a society open to all who have an interest in the application of computers to the study of art and design. We hold an annual conference and publish the conference proceedings, run an email discussion list and keep in contact with our members through a newsletter. CHArt also sponsors the World Wide Web Virtual Library for History of Art. You will find further details of all our publications and activities on this web site.

Mirror of the World: Books & Ideas

This exhibition showcases many of the rare, beautiful and historically significant books held in the Library’s collections. Located in the galleries overlooking the magnificent La Trobe Reading Room, this exhibition celebrates the unique place of books in our hearts and minds.

Mirror of the World: Books & Ideas provides an overview of the history of book production, design and illustration, with a display of fine examples from the Library's collections dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. The title of the exhibition is taken from William Caxton’s Myrrour of the Worlde (1490), one of the first illustrated books published in England.

CCP DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD

The CCP Documentary Photography Award is a biennial showcase of contemporary Australian documentary photography. Since the inaugural exhibition in 1997, this event has grown in profile and significance. It represents a unique, national initiative in support of documentary photography, providing a rare opportunity to assess the themes, styles and ideas that characterise this fascinating genre. This year's exhibition demonstrates the breadth of contemporary approaches to documentary practice from traditional black and white narratives through to vibrant colour recordings all of which have been achieved without digital manipulation. Themes range from Victoria's Black Saturday bushfires through to ocean swim racing and portraits of people having their haircut.

Yesterday, Fri 25th Sept, the Bellebyrd site passed 400,000 hits. There were 350,000 hits on 31st May, and 300,000 on 25th February. That's 100,000 in 7 months.

We are living in the society of the spectacle. In spite of its alienating effects on our life and social relationships, it’s one of the very fundamental conditions of our existence. We perceive the world and communicate with each other through the spectacle – a system of image production and representation dominated by the logic of market capitalism which tends to “develop” our faculties of perception, imagination and reflection towards a “one dimensional model” formatted by the language of consumerist ideology. This is also the very contemporary condition of our self-identification and social order “guaranteed” by the established power system. As a main typology of artistic and cultural events of our time, biennials of contemporary art are no doubt an ultimate form of expression of such a tendency...

Martin Sastre: We are the World (Something has to Change for Everything to Stay the Same)
8 - 30 September 2009

The Hayward Gallery
Project Space
Southbank Centre
Belvedere Road
London, SE1 8XX

www.hayward.org.uk/

http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/calendar/productions/martin-sastre-132f

This September the Hayward Gallery Project Space presents an exhibition of works by the Uruguayan artist Martin Sastre. This will be his first exhibition in a major UK institution.

Sastre's videos combine a love of trashy pop culture with witty meditations on global politics. He is fascinated by the notion of the cover version or remake, and describes his work as existing 'on the frontier between reality and fiction'.

In the animated video KIM X LIZ (2008), viewers see the flowering of an unexpected love affair between Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, who is a well-known fan of Taylor's. Sastre is fascinated by these two figures, who he sees not only as real people but also fictional characters created by the desires of societies driven by the cult of celebrity and the cult of personality.

Making its debut at the Hayward Gallery Project Space is Sastre's latest work, Ride with Obama (2009). Continuing Sastre's enquiry into impersonations and the rewriting and re-depiction of reality, the film shows the artist visiting a Madrid theme park in the company of a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to President Barack Obama. Here the two men from the Americas explore the rides and inhabit the theme park, which represents a place in Europe where artifice dominates and authenticity has slipped out of sight.

Renew Newcastle

Renew Newcastle has been established to find short and medium term uses for buildings in Newcastle's CBD that are currently vacant, disused, or awaiting redevelopment.

Renew Newcastle aims to find artists, cultural projects and community groups to use and maintain these buildings until they become commercially viable or are redeveloped. Renew Newcastle is not set up to manage long term uses, own properties or permanently develop sites but to generate activity in buildings until that future long term activity happens.

Renew Newcastle was founded to help solve the problem of Newcastle's empty CBD. While the long term prospects for the redevelopment of Newcastle's CBD are good, in the meantime many sites are boarded up, falling apart, vandalised or decaying because they are is no short term for use them and no one taking responsibility for them.

Renew Newcastle has been set up to clean up these buildings and get the city active and used again.

http://renewnewcastle.org/

Renew Newcastle is a low budget community driven initiative. We rely on the support and goodwill of the Newcastle Community and our supporters across Australia and around the world for our project to succeed. We welcome any support from the moral to the practical!

There are four key ways in which you can support Renew Newcastle.

If you are an artist, creative type or a community group you can Propose a project to Renew Newcastle. We are always keen to hear from people with strong ideas that will bring life and activity back to the Newcastle CBD.

If you are a property owner or are able to help us get access to transitional and vacant properties then we encourage you to Propose a Property.

Renew Newcastle relies largely on the support of many volunteers. If you want to lend us a hand then please visit our Volunteering page.

And finally, if you are cash rich and time poor Renew Newcastle is actively seeking donations to allow us to continue breathing life back to Newcastle. Please visit our donation section for information on how to donate.
