John Dermer

JOHN DERMER IS NAMED WORLD'S BEST SALT GLAZER

Victorian John Dermer was recently declared winner of the prestigious international salt-glazing competition Salzbrand Keramik 2006.

The awards began in Germany in the 1980s and are held every five years in Koblenz to celebrate salt-glazing styles and techniques. This year over 170 entries were submitted from ceramicists and potters around the world.

==================

The international salt-fired ceramics competition held by Handwerkskammer Koblenz every five years seeks to track down and document the current state of the art in this field of ceramics in all five continents. It is intended to act as an incentive for ceramists, as it has been doing world-wide since 1983, and seeks to deal with the topic of salt-firing. This not least because the organiser will be putting the great variety of salt-firing – from traditional to experimental procedures – on show at the Galerie Handwerk Koblenz. It also allows the differences in form and colour in the competition works, which are often brought about by typical for a country, speak their own language at the exhibition.

Aquarelle crayon monotype

An Aquarelle crayon monotype is a unique process in which you can use a combination of drawn images and printmaking techniques. The result is a one-of-a-kind print using non-toxic water based mediums. The hand transfer is made by pressing damp paper over the printing plate, re-hydrating the Aquarelle crayons.

==============

The Sidney Nolan Trust has become a centre for fine art printmakers in The Border Marches who want to explore the exciting potential of solar plate and photopolymer film printmaking. The Trust's printmaking tutor, Mike Clements, has been working with solar plate for some years. He runs introductory courses for printmakers wishing to learn the new technique. Workshops can be run either at the Trust's premises near Presteigne or at outside venues in the region.

Jenny LeBlanc

I made this piece to resemble a balance beam. It has a piano hinged lid, which, when opened, reveals an intricate sintra cut of a figure performing a balancing act on a beam. I ink the cut, lay paper down, close the lid to the beam press and close the brass latches on the outside of the press.

I then perform the very act that is cut into the sintra on the beam. The weight of my body performing the act supplies enough pressure to print the cut on the paper.

After the performance on the beam, the paper is removed and bound into a twelve-foot long accordion book depicting the very balancing act that created it.

The parts of the book that print most clearly result from the positioning of my body over those portions of the beam during the performance, and as such, no two books look exactly the same.

Steve & Brocky

Flags on the Sydney Harbour Bridge will fly at half mast for the next two days as a mark of respect for Peter Brock and Steve Irwin.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says both men were magnificent Australians and made a significant contribution.

He says Brock helped put Bathurst on the international motor racing map and Irwin was a much loved ambassador for Australian wildlife.

A funeral for Mr Brock will be held in Melbourne today and a memorial service for Mr Irwin will be held in Queensland tomorrow.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors Worldwide are today in mourning for a beloved friend and respected leader. The global response to the loss of Steve Irwin and the public outpouring of empathy we have received has been overwhelming, and a significant comfort to those of us who knew him. This is not just a loss for us, but for a planet full of people who loved him so well, and for the world’s precious wildlife that he laid his life on the line to protect.

Motor racing legend Peter Brock was remembered as a man of the people at his state funeral in Melbourne yesterday.

Hundreds of mourners packed St Paul's Anglican Cathedral to farewell the man who became known as "king of the mountain" for his nine Bathurst 1000 victories.

Celebrate Peter's Life There will be a State funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday September 19 at 11am.

The expected overflow of Peter’s many friends and supporters can also view the service from Federation Square directly opposite the Cathedral.

Peter’s friends and supporters are also invited to attend a memorial service at Sandown Raceway on Friday September 22 at 2pm.

Peter has always expressed the wish that rather than sending flowers, please make a donation to the Peter Brock Foundation so that we can continue his vision and good works.

Download the Podcast
http://www.nmwa.org/exhibition/detail.asp?exhibitid=141

This exhibition features intensely colorful canvases and extremely intricate paintings on bark by 33 contemporary Australian Aboriginal women painters from indigenous communities all over the continent. Rooted in Aboriginal stories called Dreamings, these paintings express the women’s connection to the land and their country. The exhibition gives insight into the separated gender spheres that still exist in Aboriginal societies, and highlights the important contributions of female artists to this unique contemporary art.
More about the exhibition...

stencil notes

These are my studio notes on creating a stencil with paper and varnish. It is a process that I have devised for myself .

this is for a handcut handdrawn stencil

step one: design
materials: paper, pencil, ruler and erasor, pen, brush and ink
  • start with a sheet of heavy watercolour paper [300gsm]
  • mark out the outline of the outer edge of the image [eg 4 x 6 ins]
  • then add a wide border to strengthen the stencil. The border shuld be around a third of the image size, between 3 and 10cms depending on paper size.

insufficient border
  • If there are alignment or registration problems with using the stencil in conjunction with other stencils , consider and resolve them now.
  • draw out your design in pencil
  • there are physical limitations to how small or large the holes can be. You have to decide where the bridges that join the shapes go. Its similar to planning the blacks and the whites in linocut, with the added complication that everything must join together with structural integrity.

too much lateral movement
  • paint in the 'black' areas where the paper will be removed. Erase construction lines. Check the design works. Look at it from a distance. It should be easily read from across the room.
  • scan photocopy or otherwise record the design
step two: cutting
materials: cutting pad, sharp knife, ruler, lightbox
  • you need a sharp knife that you can use like a pencil. It is essential that the blade is very sharp so disposable blade knives are ideal.
  • cut the smallest holes first and the fiddly bits. This is to make full use of the paper's strength for as long as possible. The more you remove, the more fragile the stencil becomes. Cut 'away' from fragile bridges.
  • cut the big holes last
  • use a light box or the sunlit sky to view the stencil at regular intervals to check for errors.
  • you can make repairs with paper tape. [ paper address labels are good] Tape the stencil both sides, then cut the tape to match the stencil.
  • when you have finished place it against your black book and check it out.
step three: waterproofing
materials: shellac flakes, metholated spirits, jam jar, plastic spoon, cheap paint brush, newspapers.
  • cover your work surface with newspaper; prepare a seperate drying area also covered with newspaper
  • mix the shellac flakes with the meths in the jam jar. Stir until it dissolves. Try 1:4 shellac to meths. Play with the consistencies, until you get a mix that is right for you.
  • You don't need to use it all, keep some extra flakes in reserve to thicken the mixture if required.
  • Shellac will thicken when stored, just add more meths to thin. Store with tight lid on.
  • Place the stencil on the newspaper and coat both sides with shellac. Dry on prepared newspaper. Repeat several times.
  • Clean the brush with meths, then soap and water.
  • The shellac soaks into the paper and waterproofs it. It also strengthens it. The paper resembles a hard thin waterproof card.
Step four: proofing
materials: paper, paint etc

  • mark the registration marks on the back of the stencil

  • tape the paper into place, turn stencil over.
  • proof the stencil

  • check the design, recut or repair any errors

  • keep re-proofing the stencil until you are satisfied.

  • the stencil is now ready for use

the Ukiyo-e technique

This site is intended to help students, collectors and researchers better understand the Ukiyo-e technique.

Taking the Davison Art Center Collection of 18th and 19th century Japanese prints as its starting point, the site focuses on techniques utilized in prints from the collection, and is not meant to be a survey of Japanese prints or a history of Ukiyo-e.

Photographs and video clips show demonstrations of the techniques by master printmaker Keiji Shinohara.

These demonstrations are accompanied by traditional prints from the DAC collection, and contemporary prints by Keiji Shinohara.

A Brief History of the Poster

We now feature nearly 3.500 antique posters on-line with thumbnails

This is the most famous American poster of all time. Few people know that it is a self-portrait of the artist, one of the leading illustrators in America. Flagg's riveting stare was dubbed by one observer as "mobilization by shame": there was no escaping this Uncle Sam. It was the most effective recruiting poster of all time, being reused in World War II and Vietnam.

Most people also don't know that this poster was a borrowed concept. It was taken from a British poster done three years earlier by Alfred Leete, who portrayed the head of the Army in a similar pose, with the headline "Your country needs you." Leete's poster was so effective that the concept was copied by almost every other combatant in the war.

=============

In 1914 a weekly magazine, London Opinion, published a design by Alfred Leete featuring a picture of Lord Kitchener on the cover. Leete's design was later adapted by The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee and used as a poster to help recruit soldiers to fight for Britain in World War I.
